What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is an evidence-informed, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal (MSK) system. Chiropractic care can treat and prevent biomechanical disorders by restoring the structural and functional integrity of the spine, joints, muscle and nerves through manual adjustments and/or manipulation of joints and muscles. Chiropractic care works to reduce pain, improve postural and MSK system functionality of patients. How Can You Benefit from Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic looks at the body as whole, focusing on the system of muscles, joints and nerves. We help find the root cause to the problem to treat the conditions and prevent future injuries. Here are some of its benefits and conditions that can be treated through chiropractic care:

What to Expect for Your Initial Chiropractic Appointment?
Assessment
Although your chiropractor may be treating you for your headache, neck pain, back pain and or other aches and pains, your chiropractor will ask you other questions outside of your chief complaint. To get a complete picture of your health history and current health status, your chiropractor performs an assessment to better tailor a treatment plan for you. Your assessment may include questions such as:
|
Once your history consultation is complete. Your chiropractor, will proceed to initiate the physical examination, with your consent, to further understand your chief complaint. It is important for you to wear comfortable clothes to your visit to the chiropractor so that these physical exams can be performed without restrictions.
Some tests that may be performed during your physical examination will include:
|
Once the history and physical examination is complete. The chiropractor will determine a diagnosis for your chief complaint and go through his or her findings with you. Your chiropractor will then create a treatment plan specific to your needs, recommend further advance testing (ex. Blood test, x-ray, MRI) or refer you to another healthcare professional if necessary.
What types of Chiropractic treatments do we offer?
Our chiropractors at Nexus Massage & Rehab have gone through extensive education and training. Each practitioner varies in how they approach their treatment plan. Learn about the different treatments that you may encounter during your chiropractic session:
Spinal / Extremities Manipulation Therapy (SMT)
This manual therapy refers to when a chiropractor applies a manipulation to a vertebrae or joint that have abnormal movement patterns or fails to function normally. SMT is described as a high velocity (fast), low amplitude (low force) thrust applied to a joint to restore range of motion, reduce muscle spasm and nerve irritability. SMT often accompanies an audible “pop” from the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide gas exiting the joint capsule, alleviating the build up of joint pressure.
Most patients experience an instant sensation of relief after the joint manipulation. Although this may follow by minor soreness if the patient tenses up during the adjustment, this soreness last only for a short period of time.
Myofascial Release Technique
This soft tissue therapy treats functional immobility and pain by targeting the connective tissue in your body called fascia. Fascia is a thin, durable, elastic connective tissue that wraps around and supports many of the structures in the body, including muscles. When fascia becomes tight or damaged through trauma, overuse or inactivity, it can cause pain, reduce range of motion and restrict blood flow to tissues; setting up an environment for slow healing. Myofascial release help increase range of motion, decrease fascial tension and increase blood circulation.
Medical / Contemporary Acupuncture
Our chiropractors use acupuncture as a way to stimulate blood flow and neural activation to promote tissue healing. This is accomplished by inserting fine needles into anatomically defined neurofunctional sites and activated manually or with electricity.
Acupuncture can treat headaches, neck pain, low back pain, frozen shoulder, knee arthritis, hip pain, plantarfasciitis, muscle tension and much more.
Exercise Therapy
A treatment plan is incomplete without including self-care home exercises. Exercise therapy is a plan made up of activities or exercises specially designed to reach therapeutic goals. Whether the purpose is to restore normal range of motion, reduce pain, muscle retraining, or to increase daily functionality, exercise therapy creates muscle memory.
Clients who participate in exercise therapy can benefit from improved motor and sensory function, increased independence, injury reduction and increased overall health.
Your chiropractor will be able to provide simple exercises that you can do at home to help with your pain and to help prevent re-injury.
Modalities
Although chiropractors use their hands for most treatments, they also use other methods such as cupping, taping, instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilization, ultrasound, infrared laser therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.
Cupping
Cupping helps increase blood flow, and relieve muscles tension by applying a vacuum to an area. The cups draws stagnant blood to the surface of the skin to allow increased blood flow to bring in nutrients and flush out waste, creating an optimal environment for healing. It is very common for the cups to leave red and dark circular marks post treatment. This may last up to one week.
Taping
Kinesiotaping (K-Tape) is a thin cotton tape with adhesive coating used for muscular activation and lymphatic drainage in acute injuries. This method can be used to accelerate post-injury muscular re-training, stabilize joints, and decrease swelling and inflammation.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
This technique uses a metal tool to break down scar tissues, increase fascial movement and blood circulation within the body. This promotes blood flow to the area to facilitate the healing process. IASTM technique works great to decrease muscular tension in areas where manual therapy is limited. During the treatment, you may experience some bruising and redness.
Ultrasound
This technology uses vibration to promote extensibility of collagen, blood flow, tissue healing, range of motion and increase metabolic rate of tissue to promote faster healing. Ultrasound is great for reducing pain and muscle spasms.
Infrared Laser Therapy
Laser therapy / Phototherapy is a treatment modality that uses photons in a particular region in the light spectrum to treat various medical conditions.
Infrared light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by mitochondria (powerhouse of the cells) and cell membranes which is then converted into biological energy to restore homeostasis. This is done through increased blood circulation, accelerated tissue repair, reduced pain, decreased inflammation/edema (swelling), enhanced immune response and angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels). Laser therapy helps with nerve damage and acute injuries.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
This technology delivers small electrical impulses through electrodes that have adhesive pads attached to a person’s skin. The electrical impulses reduce the ability for the nervous system to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain. The same electrical impulses stimulate the body to produce endorphins, which is a natural painkiller. This helps decrease pain in acute injuries.
